Red Onion Chutney

Red onion chutney is a hot and tasty accompaniment with idli and dosa.

  • 2 onions
  • 2 green chilly
  • 1/2 teaspoon methi
  • 1/2 teaspoon chilly powder
  • salt to taste
  • 1+1 teaspoon oil
  • asafoetida a pinch
  • 1/4 teaspoon urad dal
  • a few curry leaves


  1. Cut the onions into chunks.

  2. Take oil in a pan and saute the green chilly and methi seeds. Keep them aside.

  3. Now, saute the onions until it is translucent in colour.

  4. Let cook. Grind them together along with chilly powder and salt.

  5. Take a pan, add oil and put the mustard seeds. As it crackles, put asafoetida, urad dal and curry leaves. Saute for a few seconds and pour it over the prepared chutney. Red onion chutney is ready to serve.

Recipe Notes

  • Adjust chilly and chilly powder according to your taste.
  • It tastes good, if it is spicy.
