Rava dosa is an instant, tasty, crispy crepe from South Indian cuisine. Rava is the indian name for semolina. It is also known as Sooji.

Rava dosa is made by mixing different flour with water. It is then made into a thin crepe that tastes too good. I would like to mention here, do not use the fine or the thick variety, use the medium one, we usually call it as Bombay Rava.

It’s one of the recipes that I make often at home. It is the favourite and most probably our Sunday breakfast. It’s time consuming and so light that one needs ample patience to make it, not really for a busy day.

This is an instant dosa that can be prepared without much headache. If you are alone, then you can make a couple of these and enjoy with a cup of hot coffee!

Here is the fermented version of Rava Dosa/ Semolina Dosa.

Ingredients:      Measurement used: 1 cup =150 ml

  • 2 cup rava (semolina)
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 cup rice flour
  • 2 teaspoon gram flour
  • salt to taste
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • water for mixing
  • oil for roasting

Method :

  1. Take a wide bowl and mix only the dry ingredients.
  2. In another small bowl, put four tablespoon of the mix and add water to it. Mix it well. The batter should be of thin consistency, keep it aside for ten minutes.
  3. Heat a skillet, smear a little oil, take a spoonful of batter and pour it, hold the handle of the skillet in the left hand and turn it around. The  batter spreads across by itself. Drizzle some oil.
  4. Let cook on moderate flame. For a few seconds, you can increase the flame but take care.
  5. Once it is done, remove and serve.
  6. Chutney and potato stir fry may be served but it needs no accompaniment. It can be enjoyed like that only.

Take a tip:

  • You can prepare as much batter as you want.
  • Store the remaining flour in an air tight container and refrigerate for further use.
  • You can add ginger, coriander, green chilli to the batter. Onion can be put as a topping after pouring the batter.
